As a frequent contributor to Rolling Stone magazine, Thompson achieved status as both a counter cultural icon, as well as notoriety as a fierce critic of President Richard Nixon. Thompson had earned a precarious living as a journalist prior to 1964, the year that he immersed himself in the nascent Hells Angels biker culture of California.
